The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta is a beautiful blue color variety of the magnificent Halfmoon Butterfly Betta. The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta boasts a breathtaking color pattern in which the body coloration radiates partially into the fins. The fin coloration then progresses to a delicate clear/white coloration. The crisp margin between the blue and white creates a distinct “banding” effect, forming a rough oval or “bulls-eye” pattern. This two-tone “Butterfly” color pattern imparts a striking, yet ephemeral quality to the Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta.
In addition to the “Butterfly” color pattern, this variety of Betta splendens has been selectively bred to exhibit a gorgeous “Half Moon” tail. The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta has highly ornate fins with the caudal (tail) fin forming a semicircle or “half moon” shape. The caudal spread of a Halfmoon Betta is 180 degrees. The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta is an ornate variety sure to be an exciting addition for Betta breeders and enthusiasts.
The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta shares the same care requirement as other Betta splendens varieties. As such, only one male Betta should be kept in an aquarium. However, the smaller, shorter-finned females may be housed together with caution. If kept in a community aquarium, the Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta should be housed with peaceful fish that will not nip at the Betta’s glorious, flowing fins.
An ideal environment for the Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta is a well-filtered aquarium that maintains a stable temperature between 75° and 86°F. Though other varieties of Bettas are often sold in small bowls in department stores, for the best care, the Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta should be kept singly in aquariums of at least 1 gallon. The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta also prefers a variety of hiding places amongst the foliage of freshwater plants.
For breeding purposes, male and female Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Bettas can be temporarily housed together. Once the female lays the eggs, the eggs are placed inside a bubble nest and tended by the male Betta. Fry appear in about 24 hours and must be fed very small food initially, such as crushed or powdered flakes and newly hatched brine shrimp. Fry will also accept finely chopped hard-boiled egg yolk. Though the Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta can be bred in the home aquarium, it requires an experienced hobbyist with a trained eye to maintain and perpetuate the particular traits that distinguish the Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta from other varieties. Halfmoon Bettas do not breed true. In other words, the offspring will not always have a true, half moon tail.
The Blue Halfmoon Butterfly Betta is a carnivore and its diet should consist of a quality flake food, pelleted Betta diet, frozen or freeze-dried bloodworms and brine shrimp.
